Well, you have to admit that the GBGB's crowd wasn't exactly pure itself[assuming that you are attacking UK punk] Moreover, wasn't UK punk critiqued for being too 'political'? At the same time, wasn't CBGB/Punk critiqued for being nihilistic and apolitical?

I think that it is too easy to blame svengalis like McLaren for the supposed corruption of punk. Remember, despite McLaren's pretentions, UK punk somehow transcended him.

As far as the Pistols are concerned, I think that it is obvious that they[or Rotten at least] wanted to transcend mere nihilism. They sure had a very interesting and compelling way of expressing themselves. Still, just like Hell, I think that the Pistols where[and still are!]misunderstood.
