as i write this, my cat has developed a ferine relationship w/ my copy of Hot and Cold and is giving off a weird stink that he insists should permeate the pages...The poems in Hot and Cold and things like the sexually mutated albino doe in It's All True from Artifact allude to an eroticised, sort of pantheist, yet perhaps more arcadian strand to Hell's writing, which is reminiscent of certain of Huysmans' work and might also have something to do with an interest in Gerard de Nerval also. Jonathon Swift? There is a lot of dirt in there -as in soil/earth/jewelled turtles crawling out of ponds, Billy Mudd etc. (also is Billy Mudd any kind of conscious reference to Billy Budd? always meant to check that out) Yes, there is excrement also. The really good thing about this is that it confounds that assumption that Richard Hell is a creature forever tied to implicitly urban concepts (punk/cbgb/new york etc.) ...anyway, i was just thinking about this and wondered if anyone else had formulated any thoughts regarding Richard Hell's relationship to/with natural imagery?
