'New York' was originally called 'Pills', and was not about the NY scene in general, it was about the New York Dolls, about whom Malcolm would rave about to the Pistols. Paul & Steve were unashamed Dolls fans but John remained less enthusiastic and directed the lyrics at the Dolls.
PS-Steve freely admits that he stole Thunders' style, as well as his trademark sneer that he employed whilst with the Dolls.
