Well, "Never Mind the Bollocks" is for me one of the greatests rock albums ever, and the best 70's punk rock album for sure, better than the Ramones, the Saints and the Voidoids and WAY better than the Clash, Damned, Buzzcocks, etc. Let's explain this: great songs, great riffs, GREAT lyrics, lyrics that define the punk feeling and the punk movement. Steve Jones did an incredible job with his guitars, the band sounds great, and the voice, well, is PERFECT. You can say that the Stooges were better (and I agreed with that), that the New York Dolls did it before (OK, but just the sound of the guitars and the structure of the songs) and that Richard invented punk. All of this is true, but the Sex Pistols were much more than that. Also, so what? Everybody have influences, and the way the Pistols present all this influences was original. And for Malcom McLaren: the man was almost a genious. The proof is in the pudin: John Lydon makes at least two tottally classics and groundbreaking and adventorous and excellents albums more, I'm talking about PIL's first two albums. All my respect to Richard Hell, anyway. |
