Quine

I met Bob Quine once in the Spring of 1999 at Mojo
Guitars on St. Marks. I told him that i was from the
same part of Ohio as him, and he looked semi
pleased by this. Chris razzed him by asking me if i
remember him as the guy that tried to pick me up
on the playground, and Quine was so good with
playing along, very quick and good natured. I saw it
again when i went to buy a bass pickupfrom Chris
for $50, and Bob immediately offered $250 for it.
We spoke briefly about Richard, and at the end, i
did the cheesiest thing you can do as a fan. I had
my picture taken with him. Normally, that's unlike
me, but i was just so proud to have spent a part of
the afternoon with this man, and he'd been so
damned accomodating and friendly. In fact, he
never once complained that I'd interrupted his
lunch!
When I went back to Mojo's, Chris and i talked
about Quine a lot. We talked about which guitars in
the shop at that time were "Quine approved" (in
fact, he talked me into buying a telecaster by
assuring me that the guitar would be Quine
approved, were Quine to play it... )
I always wanted to get Bob to play a solo on a
song of mine. It always crossed my mind to see
what i could do. But I moved to Brooklyn, Chris and
i lost touch and it just became something i thought
about a couple of times a year. So now when i see
the Brooklyn Bridge this week, and the flags are
flying at half mast, and when i see flags all over the
place flying in half mast this week, I'll think that
they're flying for Bob Quine. |
