Richard and Tom talk and sing kind of alike. I'm sure Richard talks about this. I also think it's true that Tom has copped/adopted a lot of stuff Richard thought/said/did first. Which should be flattering but is surely annoying...
I heard of Television first, before Hell. Though, weirdly, I did SEE Richard in Smithereens in 1997, I believe it was, not knowing who he was. I knew and listened to Patti Smith, Talking Heads, Blondie, and less so the Ramones, but didn't know a lot beyond that. I heard Marquee Moon played in Magnolia Cafe on South Congress in Austin in 1998, and during the course of my meal, listened closely to what must have been nearly the whole thing, completely intrigued. I didn't know if it were current or 'old', I couldn't even tell if Tom Verlaine was a man or woman, for sure - he actually reminded me of a twisted, more engaging Chrissie Hynde (sp?) - and I decided it was some of the best music I had ever heard. I asked the waiter what it was... Still a big fan, but mainly only of that one album.
