"Unfortunately, Hell's brilliance was misconstrued by
people who were ruled by fear. In these people's hands
Blank Generation was seen as an act of negation for the dismal circumstances that confronted them,as a call for Nihilism. Thus Blank Generation became to be seen as the bastard stepfather of the Sex Pistol's Pretty Vacant and all the dogmatic cant that was to follow in its wake"
Ho hum, US punk V's UK punk - is this argument not long dead and buried ?
Blank Generation was the direct inspiration for Pretty Vacant, ask Glen Matlock, but only in the title as he hadnt actually heard the song at the time
But then, Blank Generation the song was inspired by 'Beat Generation'
all art is theft, everyone is inspired by someone else, its whether you enjoy what comes out at the end that matters
as soon as any art is out there, it is open to interpretation and your message can get lost
so what ? its part of the fun !
and punk and politics, surely 'I belong to the blank generation' is as political (with a small p) as any of the UK bands ever got ? |
