I never knew Laughner except by reputation, but he and Strummer seem like opposite personalities, each exemplifying the best of his country's take that music's potential (American/personal, British/political). It's one thing to carry a gun because you need a gun and another to carry it so you can check it at the door. Charlotte Pressler's piece on Laughner, "Those Were Different Times", is still available online, and Richard's piece on Laughner, available in "Hot & Cold", is one of his best. He flew to Cleveland on a blank white blizzard afternoon, and a few days later Gary Lupico and I took him to the cemetary where Peter's buried. We had to ask the groundskeeper where it was, but we found the stone, and kicked it clear of snow, and Richard took a few pictures.
