Hail Hannah!

Thank you Hannah for such a meaty message.

I'm ashamed to be unable to write a worthily dense reply to it. But I did look at the link to that piece in The Believer and it made me think of something. First I have to admit I have a problem with The Believer, that it's too cute and self-congratulatory nerdy-clever. But the worst sin of that article was that it was clunky and dull and hard to read. I kept speeding through paragraphs to try to get to the point. I've always considered Lish a bad influence too, the archetype of the writers' workshop head. The article did make me think of another piece of writing though, that I thought you (Hannah) might enjoy -- a short story largely about the appreciation of sentences that's actually a pleasure to read (though also a bit on the cute side). It's a short story by Jonathan Lethem that was published by The New Yorker. It's online at http://www.newyorker.com/fiction/features/2007/12/17/071217fi_fiction_lethem. I for sure agree that sentences are the choice genre! They don't stand alone that well though.
